Task 2 C&C BS7

Band Score 7 Cohesion and coherence

Yesterday I looked at paragraph one for this question

These days people change their jobs and relocate more often than before.

Why do you think people change their jobs more now?

Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for society?

Main idea

Reasons why some people change their jobs

The supporting ideas were

Some people change their jobs because they choose to

Some people change their jobs because they need to

Here's how we made a high band score topic sentence starting with a simple topic sentence

There are various reasons why people change their jobs

Step One - Turn sentence 1 around – start with People change

People change their jobs for various reasons.

Step Two - Extend the sentence in order to give a reason:

People change their jobs for various reasons.

Step Three - Outline the supporting ideas

People change their jobs for various reasons which are related to choice and necessity.

Can you think of another structure we could use instead of for reasons related to?

Start with:

People change their jobs ...

We now have a high band score topic sentence which does two things:

  • It tells the examiner what the main idea is
  • It outlines the supporting idea in simple terms

In order to write a topic sentence like this you need to understand noun phrases and noun clauses.   You can find more about noun clauses and noun phrases here
